Abstract.
In the article, the authors raise the problem of not understanding the need for a transition to a fundamentally new approach to the realization and awareness of the process of large-scale soil survey. The updated survey methodology, by its very nature, cannot be similar to the methodology of large-scale soil surveys of the 50th-60th. The authors of the article emphasize that the time has come to abandon the outdated approaches to the survey of soil cover. A modernized methodology should be based on operational constantly updated information systems. That up-to-date soil surveys need to be considered not as digging the soil pits in separate locations, but as a large-scale measure on the collection and processing of soil information and the creation of an appropriate database. The modern Ukrainian soil survey methodology should be consistent with world and European approaches to soil survey and monitoring, harmonized with the international classification of soils, their nomenclature list, diagnostic methods and laboratory and analytical definitions of soil parameters, it should have unified measurement systems, and use precision data analysis techniques. The current stage of soil cover studies is characterized by the widespread use of geoinformation systems and high-tech methods for solving soil science problems, and especially by the high degree of international exchange of experience and information about soils.
